A Note from the Founders

Before Ikkayees became a restaurant, it was simply a group of college students in Kozhikode trying to understand what it means to care. Our journey began through Students in Palliative Care (SIPC), where we were introduced to people, situations, and realities that stayed with us far beyond those early days. The efforts you will read about in these pages come from that time; small, honest attempts to show up where it mattered, without expecting anything in return. This booklet is not a complete record of everything we have done. It is only a collection of a few moments that we were able to hold on to: through photos, notes, and memories. Much of what happened along the way was never documented, and we never really set out to present it either. But over time, we felt the need to keep a simple record of whatever we could, for ourselves and for those who have been part of this journey. These pages are just that: fragments of a much larger story, put together with honesty. Not to highlight, but to remember.

Where It All Began

The journey took shape in 2014, when we first stepped into the Institute of Palliative Medicine (IPM), where SIPC introduced us to a different way of seeing the world. What started as small acts, cleaning the premises and planting saplings around the space, slowly turned into something more meaningful. Soon after, we took umbrellas made by patients during a workshop to Mavoor Road, Kozhikode, selling them so the earnings could go back to them. That moment marked a shift from intention to action. It was followed by the launch of our first initiative, “Because I Care,” introduced at SM Street through a simple inauguration and a flash mob that brought people together around the idea.

An awareness initiative was held on July 8 at Focus Mall, Kozhikode, inviting people to pause and reflect on their life wishes. Participants were encouraged to write down what they hoped to do "before they die" on coloured sheets, creating a collective wall of thoughts and aspirations. The activity drew attention not just to personal dreams, but also to the realities faced by those in palliative care. It served as a simple way to start conversations around care, empathy, and the importance of living meaningfully.

While only a small group could be supported at the time, the initiative reflected a continued commitment to do what is possible, step by step.

A Living Presence - in Liverpool

Since 2023, Ikkayees has grown into an active and familiar presence in Liverpool, continuing its journey in a new city while holding on to the values it began with. Beyond being a place for food, it has become part of the community by supporting local events through sponsorships and collaborations, especially those that bring people together through culture and shared experiences. During festivals like Onam, Vishu, and Ramzan, efforts have been made to distribute kits and essentials, ensuring that celebrations reach those who may otherwise miss out. From cultural gatherings to food-based community events, Ikkayees has stayed involved in ways that go beyond business. What started as small, consistent acts of care has found its place even here - carried forward in a different land, but with the same intent.
